Powerful Magnet Safety Precautions and Shipping Regulations

NdFeB is the strongest permanent magnet—convenient but also dangerous. The impact force when larger magnets attract each other can pinch fingers, shatter and send fragments flying, and can also interfere with medical electronic devices. Please be sure to understand the following before handling.

Handling safety

• Pinch risk: The instant impact force when strong magnets attract is very large; wear gloves when handling and keep fingers out from between two magnets.
• Brittle and prone to flying fragments: NdFeB is brittle and can shatter and send fragments flying on impact; we recommend wearing safety goggles.
• Separating large magnets: Slide them apart to stagger them; do not pull them straight apart by force.

Personal and medical safety

• People with a pacemaker, defibrillator, or other medical electronic device should keep a safe distance from powerful magnets.
• Magnets can demagnetize or interfere with credit cards, transit cards, mechanical watches, hard drives, mobile phones, and more; store them separately.

Temperature and storage

Avoid exposing magnets to environments above their maximum temperature rating for extended periods, or irreversible demagnetization (permanent loss of magnetic force) will occur. Different grades have different temperature ratings: the N series is about 80°C, SH about 150°C, and UH/EH can reach 180–200°C. Store in a dry environment to avoid coating and body corrosion from prolonged humidity.

Shipping regulations

Magnets are classified as magnetized cargo in air transport and must comply with IATA regulations: after packing, the magnetic field strength at a specified distance from the package surface must not exceed the limit, or it may interfere with aircraft instruments. For export or air freight, AHL uses appropriate magnetic shielding packaging to comply with the regulations.
