NdFeB material oxidizes and rusts easily, so a protective coating is almost always required. Choose based on environment and budget:

A magnet's field strength is often given as the "surface field," measured in gauss (G) or tesla (T). Conversion: 1 tesla = 10,000 gauss.
A few key concepts:
- Remanence Br sets the material's inherent field ceiling; higher grades (e.g., N52) have higher Br.
- The field decays rapidly with distance—strength drops noticeably just a short way from the surface.
- Factors affecting the surface field: grade, shape ratio (taller height/diameter = stronger), measurement distance, and whether a magnetic circuit is used (a steel yoke concentrates the field and boosts pull force).
- Surface field ≠ pull force: pull force also depends on contact area, the attracted material, and any air gap.

- Strong magnets snap together with great force—wear gloves to avoid pinched fingers.
- NdFeB is brittle and can shatter on impact—wear safety goggles.
- Keep a safe distance if you have a pacemaker or medical electronic device.
- Keep away from credit cards, transit cards, hard drives, phones and other magnetically sensitive items.
- Avoid temperatures above the rated limit to prevent irreversible demagnetization.
- Keep away from children—swallowing multiple magnets can cause serious intestinal injury and requires immediate medical care.
- Air shipments must comply with magnetic cargo (IATA) rules using magnetic-shielded packaging.
- RoHS: restricts hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE.
- REACh: complies with Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) reporting.
- RMI Conflict Minerals: free of 3TG (tin, tungsten, tantalum, gold); CMRT declaration available.

- Axial: poles on the top and bottom faces—the most common. Suits discs, cylinders, blocks.
- Diametric: poles on opposite sides of the circumference. Suits cylinders and rings.
- Multi-pole: alternating N/S pole pairs on the same face. Suits motors, encoders, sensors.
- Rings: can be axially, diametrically, or multi-pole magnetized.
- Arc / segment: usually radially magnetized, common in motor rotors.
